What to know during an earthquake - tips

An earthquake is a vibration of the Earth's surface caused by natural causes, most of which are weak, often imperceptible, which do not cause any harm to people. And some of them will be followed by great destruction, accompanied by great sacrifices.

Earthquakes are mainly caused by tectonic processes, the center of which is the area of the earth's core, where the energy accumulated in the rocks over a long period of time is released. The strength of the earthquake is measured by the magnitude (total energy of the waves) and points.

To avoid danger during an earthquake, there are some recommended actions that we will present in this blog.

How to behave during an earthquake:

  • In case of a weak earthquake, it is better not to panic and stay where you are.

What to do during a strong earthquake if you are in a building:

  • leave the building by stairs or through the windows of the first floor;
  • Do not use the elevator;
  • Stand by the inner wall in the corner, in the doorway, by the pillar;
  • If the building is old and the walls are insecure, it is better to take shelter under a bed or a table;
  • Keep away from objects that may fall, such as chandeliers, wall cabinets;
  • Do not run for the stairs or fall outside until the shaking stops. As studies have shown, a large number of people are injured mainly when leaving buildings.

What to do during a strong earthquake if you are on the street:

  • Get out into the open and away from the buildings;
  • Try to keep your distance and avoid traffic lights, power cables and go into empty space;
  • Watch for nearby objects that may fall.

If you are behind the wheel:

  • If you are behind the wheel, it is better to stop the car. Try to move your car as far away from the traffic zone as possible;
  • Do not park on or under bridges, overpasses, traffic lights, trees, light poles or road signs;
  • It is best to stay in the car until the shock stops;
  • Before continuing, check the news to see if there is any damage on the road you plan to travel on.

If you follow in the ruins:

  • Keep calm and save energy;
  • Move as little as possible to avoid creating dust;
  • Do not light a match;
  • Cover your mouth with clothes;
  • Knock on a nearby pipe or wall so they can hear your voice and help rescuers find you easily. Scream, but remember that you may swallow harmful dust.
